Start the New Sunday School Year with a Celebration Kids Won’t Forget by making Promotion Sunday a Gospel-Centered Celebration
Promotion Sunday is a big moment in the life of your church—it marks the start of a new year of growth, learning, and gospel transformation in your children’s ministry. Whether your church calls it Promotion Sunday, Move-Up Day, or Pop-Up Sunday, it’s more than just a logistical shift—it’s a joyful milestone worth celebrating!
Last year, our church decided to make Promotion Sunday feel like a party. We set up a balloon arch photo booth, served popcorn and popsicles, blasted bubbles, and created signs and goodie bags to welcome every child to their new classroom. The result? Giggles, grins, and gospel-centered excitement about a new year of learning about Jesus.
[We even got some new volunteers out of the event by making it a church wide celebration and including a 'how can I serve?' table encouraging new church members to join the children's ministry fun.]
Here are some ideas to help you host a fun and meaningful Promotion Sunday:
-
🎈 Create a festive photo booth with a balloon arch and printable signs so families can capture the moment.
-
🍿 Serve themed snacks like corn pops, pop rocks, popsicles, and popcorn. Even soda (“pop”) fits the theme!
-
🛍️ Hand out pop-up gift bags filled with items that are fun and on theme—think pop-its, lollipops, and bubbles!
-
💌 Use printable signs to help kids mark their transition with phrases like “Poppin’ Up to 2nd Grade!”
-
💬 Encourage teachers to cheer on the kids as they walk into their new classes—make it a celebration of growth and grace!
Promotion Sunday is more than fun—it’s a strategic way to help kids feel, seen, and celebrated and a reminder to the church that kids matter in God's kingdom!
