The first day of a new Sunday school year is full of excitement—for the kids, the parents, and especially for the volunteers who faithfully serve week after week. A few years ago, I decided to mark that special day with something simple but meaningful: a "Volunteer Kickoff Breakfast." And let me tell you, the Lord used it to bring encouragement, connection, and a sense of shared purpose that carried us through the year.
Here’s what we did:
About 30–45 minutes before classes began, I invited all of our children’s ministry volunteers—along with their families—for a light breakfast. We kept it simple (because let’s be honest, the first day of Sunday school is already full!). Just doughnuts, orange juice, coffee, and some fruit on a table with a few balloons and a banner that read:
“Orange you glad you serve in children’s ministry? We donut know what we’d do without you!”
Yes, it was a little silly. But it brought smiles, and that’s exactly what I hoped for.
Volunteers and their families trickled in and enjoyed breakfast together—kids played, parents chatted, and there was just a sweet sense of camaraderie. Before we wrapped up, I gave a short pep talk to thank them, cast a bit of vision for the year ahead, and remind them that what we do matters—not just for the church, but for eternity.
We ended our time in small groups, praying for each other, for the children we’d be teaching, and for the gospel to take deep root in every little heart.
Why I’d do it again:
-
It created space to connect with volunteers and their families outside of their weekly classroom routines.
-
It gave us a focused moment to pause and pray before the busy morning began.
-
It reminded everyone that their role matters—and that they’re not alone.
Sometimes the most meaningful ministry moments are the simplest. You don’t need a huge event or fancy spread. Just a little hospitality, a touch of humor, and hearts pointed toward the Lord.
Want to try it? Here are a few tips:
-
Keep it simple. Store-bought doughnuts and orange juice are perfect!
-
Include families. When you bless the whole household, you build lasting support for volunteers.
-
Pray together. There’s something powerful about starting the year on your knees.
-
Make it a tradition. Your volunteers will look forward to it every year.
However you launch the year, let it begin with gratitude and gospel joy. Because what we do in children's ministry matters—and so do the people who serve.
