If you’ve ever taught a group of preschoolers, you know sitting still isn’t their strong suit—and that’s okay! In fact, God created little ones to learn through movement, repetition, and experience. At Big Truth Bible Lessons for Kids, we believe that teaching preschoolers the Bible should be joyful, active, and full of wonder.
That’s why our curriculum is designed with the whole child in mind—engaging the heart, head, and hands. Each lesson is built around multi-sensory learning—because little ones don’t just learn with their ears. They sing, play, build, and dance their way into understanding and remembering God’s Word.
Here are some tips and ideas to intentionally use all five senses to help preschoolers engage with truth:
🎶 Sing the Truth
Music helps truth stick. That’s why each of our lessons includes song suggestions that reinforce the Bible story and the week’s main point. Whether you’re singing a classic like “My God Is So Big” or a simple memory verse song, music gives children language to express their faith and reminds them of what’s true—even when the lesson is over. Especially with young preschoolers there is great value in putting the truths they are hearing to simple tunes - I like to sing various truths to the tune of "Mary had a Little Lamb."
Tip: Choose songs that repeat the week’s “Big Truth” phrase. Singing “God is good” or “Jesus came to earth” reinforces what was just taught—and turns theology into worship.
🧸 Play with Purpose
Preschoolers learn best when they’re moving and playing. That’s why we include hands-on activities in every lesson—things like building with blocks, pretending with toys, role-playing the Bible story, or using simple object lessons.
Our recent blog post on Bible story sensory bins dives deeper into how sensory play (with items like sand, water, toy animals, or fabric scraps) can help children connect emotionally and physically to the lesson.
For example: a bin filled with toy lions, straw, and soft cloth becomes the perfect scene for retelling Daniel in the Lion’s Den—while reviewing how “God protects His people.”
🧱 Build the Story
Kids love to create! Our lessons often include ideas for building or crafting the Bible story scene with blocks, playdough, or simple materials like paper towel tubes and tape.
-
Build Jericho’s walls with blocks—then knock them down when the trumpets “blow”
-
Make a boat for Jonah and watch it float (or sink!)
-
Use stacking cups to talk about God's attributes: God is kind, powerful, good…
These tactile experiences help abstract truths become real in little minds and hands.
🙏 Pray from the Heart
Preschoolers can learn to pray in response to God’s Word. Every lesson includes a simple prayer prompt to help them respond with thankfulness, trust, or worship. When they say, “Thank You, God, for being with me like You were with Daniel,” they’re not just repeating words—they're internalizing truth.
Encouraging children to talk to God regularly and naturally builds a foundation of faith that will last.
🍎 Taste and Smell the Story
Don’t underestimate how powerful taste and smell can be in helping children remember a lesson. One important thing to remember when using food of any sort in your class is to check with parents about allergies.
Here are a few creative ways to bring those senses into your Bible time:
-
Smell frankincense (or essential oils) during a story about the Magi or the temple
-
Taste a grape when talking about the fruit of the Spirit or the Promised Land
-
Smell a campfire scent when discussing Peter’s denial and restoration
-
Eat honey when teaching Psalm 119:103 – “Your words are sweeter than honey”
Snacks and smells make abstract truths stick—and they give little ones something tangible to connect with spiritual ideas.
💡 Final Thoughts
When you sing, play, build, and pray, you’re doing more than just entertaining preschoolers. You’re building a foundation of truth in their hearts and helping them connect to God's Word with all their senses. Our Preschool lessons are crafted with this philosophy in mind—every activity, song, and story is chosen to help little ones know and love God deeply.
Because even the littlest learners can know the biggest truths.
