Why Teach Theology to Kids?

Why Teach Theology to Kids?

One of the distinctives we hold here at Big Truth Bible Lessons for Kids is that we are intentionally theologically rich. We believe that no one is too young to learn the big truths of the Bible. That means we don’t shy away from the “big words”—words like justification, sanctification, sovereignty, and atonement. Instead, we teach them clearly, joyfully, and age-appropriately—because theology is not just for grown-ups. It’s for all of us.

But maybe you’ve wondered…
“Why teach theology to children? Isn’t that too much for them to understand?”

Let’s talk about it.

What Is Theology, Really?

The word theology simply means “the study of God.” It’s a word that covers all kinds of truth: Who God is, what He has done, how He relates to His people, what He requires, and how He saves.

When we teach theology to children, we’re not trying to turn them into scholars. We’re helping them know God—personally, biblically, and deeply. That includes what the Bible says about God’s character, salvation, sin, grace, and glory.

Whether You Realize It or Not, You're Teaching Theology

Here’s the thing: All teaching is theological. Whether you're intentional or not, you're shaping what children believe about God.

If we avoid teaching theology, we aren’t staying neutral—we’re just letting the world, culture, or confusion fill in the gaps. Children are natural theologians. They ask deep questions like:

  • “Why did Jesus have to die?”
  • “Is God always with me?”
  • “Why do bad things happen?”

When we ground our teaching in Scripture and sound doctrine, we help children build a firm foundation. Not teaching theology is teaching theology—just not the kind you want.

Kids Can Handle Deep Truths

Some people hear “theology for kids” and balk:
“How can they understand such deep topics at such young ages?”

But let’s consider what kids already learn:

  • Preschoolers memorize dinosaur names and animal classifications.
  • My 5 year old walks around the house singing the commutative law of addition - "a+b = b+a cause order doesn't matter."
  • Early elementary students understand more tech than most adults
  • Kids of all ages can recite entire movie scripts, sing lyrics, and use words like “photosynthesis.”
  • The issue isn’t ability—it’s priority. When we give kids a strong vocabulary for faith, they rise to the challenge. I've seen 4-year-olds explain what grace means and 10-year-olds talk about how God is three-in-one.

How to Teach Theology to Kids

You don’t need to wait until your child is older to begin. Theology can be woven into every part of your teaching, worship, reading, and even play. Here are a few ways:

🎶 SING Theology

Music is powerful. It helps children memorize and internalize truth. That’s why every song suggested in our Big Truths for Young Hearts curriculum points kids directly to Scripture or doctrinal truth.

  • Sing about God’s sovereignty, His love, His rescue plan in Christ.
  • Choose songs with rich lyrics over shallow jingles.
  • Choose songs that talk about God more than they talk about me.

📖 READ Theology

Read story Bibles and Christian books that don’t water things down. Kids can handle theological terms if we explain them!

  • Choose books that explain concepts like grace, sin, mercy, holiness, and more.
  • Use repetition and illustrations to help it stick.

🧠 TEACH Theology

Don’t skip the "big words"—define them! Every lesson in our curriculum takes theological words and explains them in ways children can understand.

  • “Sanctification” becomes “God making us more like Jesus.”
  • “Justification” becomes “God saying we are right with Him because of Jesus.”

Let the weighty truths of Scripture shape kids' understanding of who God is.

🙏 PRAY Theology

Lead your kids in prayers that reflect biblical truth.

  • Praise God for being holy, loving, sovereign, and just.
  • Thank God for sending Jesus.
  • Confess sin and ask for help to grow in Christ.
  • Pray for others to know the truth about Jesus.
  • When kids hear us pray theology, they learn how to talk to God with reverence and trust.

✝️ Live It Out

Theology isn’t just knowledge—it’s transformation. Let kids see how your view of God shapes how you live, respond to trials, show compassion, and worship. Make gospel conversations a part of your every day life.

Why It Matters

When children are grounded in theology, they grow up:

  • Knowing what they believe and why.
  • Anchored when doubts come.
  • Bold to speak the gospel with clarity and confidence.
  • Equipped to stand in a world full of lies.

Our goal isn’t just smarter kids—it’s disciples of Jesus with hearts and minds shaped by truth.
